What is an MCP server?

MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It's a standard way of giving an AI coding assistant - like Claude Code, Codex etc. - access to extra tools and knowledge it wouldn't otherwise have.

An MCP server plugs into an existing AI agent and hands it a specific set of capabilities it can call on while it works.
